Special Note. Typically, online tests or assessments have a disclaimer, which clearly identifies the parameters of these products and their profiles. It is most important to note that these assessments are not designed to provide a conclusive diagnosis. Hence, the following assessments are suggested for student and professional counselors to consider as a method for obtaining information that could justify a clinical assessment or referral.

Public access. This 15-item questionnaire has been designed to screen for Bipolar Disorder. (Abbott Laboratories provided funding for the research and development of this questionnaire.)

Confidential Depression-Screening Test (for adults)--National Mental Health Association (NMHA)
Public access. This 10-item online screening assessment provides a summary based on the respondent's endorsement pattern. The selection made for each item is listed. Emergency help services are identified for respondents that feel hopeless or suicidal.

An Adult ADD Quiz (Edward M. Hallowell and John J. Ratey)
Public access. A 20 question online quiz--the questions and criterion for further assessment are based on the clinical experience of the authors.

Jasper/Goldberg Adult ADD Questionnaire (Larry Jasper and Ivan Goldberg, Mental Help Net)
Public access. A 24-item online questionnaire for adults. It is designed help determine whether adults need an evaluation for ADD or ADHD from a mental health professional or diagnostician. A relevant resource for student and professional counselors to identify experiences that are common to adults with attention disorders.

The Sexual Recovery Institute (Los Angeles, CA) provides a printed version of the following screening tests:

A Screening Test for Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder (Wayne K. Goodman, M.D., College of Medicine, University of Florida--National Institute of Mental Health)
Public access. This printed test includes 20 items for Part A, and five items for Part B--instructions and scoring guidelines are provided.

Public access. A 15-item online assessment with yes-or-no response options--designed evaluate the need for further evaluation. A yes response to five or more questions may indicate the need for a professional evaluation.

Note: Multiple versions of the Michigan Alcohol Screening Test (MAST) were created during its many years as the property of the Board of Regents, University of Michigan. Since the MAST has been in the public domain, some versions might not meet the reliability and validity standards of the original copyrighted versions.

Instructions and score interpretation options are provided for a 24-item online questionnaire (which is based on the Michigan Alcohol Screening Test [MAST]).

This printed, 24-question version of the Michigan Alcohol Screening Test has been adapted for older adults--a general scoring guideline is provided.

Alcohol Screening Questions (Join Together, Boston University School of Public Health, Boston, MA)
Public access--review the privacy statement. A 12-item online assessment screens for harmful or hazardous alcoholic beverage consumption patters. (This assessment or test is based on the Alcohol Use Disorders Identification Test, World Health Organization.)

Self-Scoring Alcohol Check-Up (Robert W. Westermeyer)
Public access. The purpose of the screening test is to provide respondents with information about their alcohol consumption. This three-part analysis (quantity, patterns, drinking situations) will help respondents determine if modifications are needed.

CSAP's Prevention Pathways online courses CSAP--Center for Substance Abuse Prevention-SAMHSA [Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration], U.S. Department of Health and Human Services)
Public access. Visitors can access contents of seven online courses that address alcohol use issues among older adults, and the role of alcohol misuse and violence against women.

Internet Addiction Test Index (eBehavior, LLC, Bradford, PA)
Public access. Online surveys or quizzes that screen for addictions related to: the Internet, online gambling and trading, and partner and parent-child relationships.

Personality Development

Online Screening for Personality Disorders- 20-items (Benjamin J. Sadock and Waguih William IsHak)

TypeFocus Personality Profile (TypeFocus Internet, Inc.)
Public access. A 66-item online assessment, which identifies weak, moderate, and strong preferences for Introversion-Extraversion, Sensing-Intuition, Thinking-Feeling, and Judgment-Perception. It includes notes about the limitations of this assessment, and it recommends that respondents confirm their preferences. Excellent explanatory notes (based on Yes, No, and I'm not sure) for each scale preference. A commercial version of this inventory is available.

Five Factor Personality Test (Tom Buchanan, Department of Psychology, University of Westminster, London, UK)
Public access. For this online assessment, each respondent uses a 5-point scale to endorse the degree of accuracy for 41 statements. The Five Factors measured by this assessment are: Extraversion (Surgency); Agreeableness (Friendliness); Conscientiousness (Will or Dependability); Neuroticism (Emotional Stability); and Openness (Culture or Intellect).

Interpersonal Relationships

Public access. The following online surveys are linked from Psychology: A ConnecText by Terry F. Pettijohn, Ohio State University, Marion, and McGraw-Hill Dushkin.

Homophobia Questionnaire (PBS Online and WGBH/Frontline)
Public access. This online questionnaire includes 25 multiple-choice items. The Homophobia Questionnaire is base on the Wright, Adams, and Bernat Homophobia Scale, and it is designed to measure a respondent's thoughts, feelings, and behavior related to homosexuality.

Discovery Health Tools (DiscoveryHealth)
No cost basic personality and nutrition assessments are available to visitors. In addition, premium (i.e., commercial) items are available for personality assessments.
