Office Product Updates (Microsoft Office Online)
Use
the online evaluation tool to identify optional updates and add-ins
related to your Office applications--an Office Update Installation
Engine (i.e., ActiveX control*) must be
installed for this service. (This server-based evaluation of
your PC does not send personally identifiable information to Microsoft's servers.) After the evaluation, a recommended
list of updates will appear. You may also click on the button, Show
Installed Updates, for a list updates installed on your computer, and
those that you can select to install.
____
*What is ActiveX control? 1) Server-to-PC. An installable module,
which is similar to a
Java Applet. However, ActiveX controls are exclusive to Windows-based computers.
ActiveX controls are installed with your authorization, and they allow
for a dynamic exchange of information between your PC and
task-specific servers (e.g., application and operating system updates, virus
detection, etc.). An ActiveX control should include the digital
signature the creator, and a certificate of authenticity from a
certifying authority (e.g., VeriSign). 2) Server-to-Web Browser. Some
Web sites include ActiveX controls that interact with the server-like
components of a Web browser to deliver dynamic ads and marketing
information.
